Amazing Nautical Decoration Tips

Nautical Shutters
If you are an ocean or beach lover who adores the smell of the ocean breeze and the warm feeling of sand squished between your toes, it is a great idea to bring home this wondrous feeling by decorating your home with nautical home decor and accessories.

Turning your home into a relaxing nautical retreat is not that difficult. In fact, with these amazing tips, you will be able to enjoy a more beautiful home that resembles the beauty of a coastal scene.

1. Choose the Right Color Theme

Color is a crucial design element so you need to find the perfect colors that will give your home a nautical look. Colors in the nautical palette include white, blue, navy blue, khaki, and sea green. These typical color schemes are commonly used for the walls, flooring and for big pieces of furniture.

However, you can add life to the room by including brighter colors such as yellow, orange, and red in the form of colored seashells, nautical flags, coastal wall art, and photographs.

It is important to select color groups that complement and blend well with each other. Combinations of blues, greens and neutrals are often great to use for any room especially in the living area or the bedroom.

Life Preserver Dinnerware
2. Bring the Flavor to the Dining Room

A nautical dining room will make you feel like you are having a picnic lunch on the beach so it would be best if you can use green chairs or folding chairs. Dinnerware can have designs of seashells or sea animals. Some of the popular themes for the dining room that you can choose from include sailboats, lobsters, fish, and seashells.

3. Whip up a Nautical Feast in the Kitchen

A kitchen can be made to look like a scene from the coast by incorporating nautical designs on windows of the kitchen. This is great as long as the designs are light, airy or breezy. You can also use nautical accessories such as pots, jars, dishtowels, potholders and so many more.

Sailing The Lakes Rug
4. Liven up the Living Area

For the living room, you can use coastal wall art to add a nautical touch to it. Include accents and accessories such as lighthouse shaped candle holders, beach lantern, seashell decorations, miniature sailboats and sailing flags. You can place the sitting area on top of a nautical inspired rug or carpet.

Southwinds Bedding Collection
5. Spunk up the Bedroom

If you want to keep it simple, painting your bedroom with a nautical palette and throwing in a few nautical accessories such as tropical wall art, model ships, lighthouse miniatures, and so on, is probably enough to do the job. But if you want something extreme, try buying a customized bed shaped like a boat or a ship.

6. Make the Bathroom a Cozy Retreat

When decorating a nautical bathroom, it is a must to choose shower curtain, rugs and bathroom accessories that go with its color theme or have a patterns of boats, anchors, seashells, ship wheels or anything that would give your bathroom a nautical feel.

Creating a nautical decor theme in your home is like connecting your haven to the environment and the result of this is an inviting, relaxing and comfortable place, just like what the sea makes you feel when you are on the beach.

How To Make Sea Glass

If you're like me, and sea glass is hard to find on your beach, I just found this video on how to "make" your own. I know it's not the same, but could be better than spending a fortune buying the real stuff (or traveling to where it is more abundant). Of course, you'll still need one of those mixer machines. Oh well, it's interesting anyway.

Tropical Decor For A Smaller Budget

When I imagine a tropical home, I see soft winds blowing sheer curtains from the ceiling to floor windows. I see much used patios complete with palm trees facing a beach then an ocean. I see bright colors and seashells gracing the walls and shelves of the home. I also see large plants that are placed on the floor and can grow as tall as the ceiling. These are the types of things that you'll want if you want to bring the tropics into your home.

To enhance your tropical decor, the furnishing should be light. If the current fabrics are dark, a slipcover could do this job nicely. If you have any wicker furniture, it should be out and used perhaps in the living room. Wicker furnishings of any sort should be accentuated. The wicker may be natural or painted white. If the wicker is painted white, most other things in the home should be white as well. The color of all of your furnishings should either be the natural honey colored woods or painted white. Both of these options lead to an open and airy feeling in the room.

Whether or not you have floor to ceiling windows is not as important as having that length in sheer curtains. Your curtains should be sheer for days when you open your windows. This will allow the curtains to gently sway in the breezes that come through the windows. Also, you don't have to live in front of a beach to have the feel of a beach right outside. You can add this feeling by incorporating these colors into your decor.

If you choose to paint the walls, you may choose a light sky blue or you may choose sandy beige. Or you can leave your walls as white as the clouds floating by. If you choose to leave the walls white, artwork depicting ocean scenes will help with a tropical atmosphere. Another addition to a tropical feel would be the use of seashells in your decor. They can be in the form or artwork or actually use the seashells in various places in your home for decor. Place them around an ocean blue candle on a clear glass plate and use as the centerpiece on your coffee table.

A wonderful touch to a tropical feel is the use of plants. There shouldn't be many. You don't want to turn tropics into the rain forest. There should be perhaps one or two large plants that sit on the floor. These plants should grow fairly large, but should not become too tall for the room they will live in. The elephant plant is perfect for this type of atmosphere. It's aesthetically pleasing by bringing just a hint of green into your decor just like there is just a little bit of green on found in tropical regions usually in the form of palm trees.

A tropical atmosphere is a light and airy one. Once you have created your tropical home decor, you can get the feeling of an exotic vacation everyday!

Give Your Backyard a Tropical Makeover

Everyone needs to get away from work and stress once in a while, and what better way to do it than to take a nice tropical vacation. With the right tropical décor, anyone can transform a typical backyard into a calm and relaxing tropical haven. Giving your backyard a new tropical makeover will give it new life, and your guests will be eager to come back for your next outdoor barbeque or party. Here a few decorating ideas that can help you get started.

1. Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the most durable materials for building both fences and furniture, not to mention the fact that it is both stylish and environmentally friendly. Replacing your old fence with a new bamboo fence is the first step in your backyard's tropical makeover. Use rolled bamboo fencing or bamboo tiki poles.

2. Tiki accents

Tiki torches, statues and other kinds of tiki accent furniture are a perfect way to tie the tropical theme of your backyard together. Remember that tropical décor, as with any other kind of décor, relies on the decorator's eye for detail. A tiki bar is also a must have, and always keep it well stocked for guests.

3. Lounge seats

Replace your old conventional backyard lounge chairs and find a set of wicker or bamboo chairs that fit your backyard. Add light-colored cushions to them, and remember to include tables for drinks and snacks. Tropical lounge furniture goes great poolside.

4. Palm trees

Palm trees and other tropical plant life is essential if you are going to go for tropical island theme. Palm trees look great and can provide ample shade to sit under during those hot summer months.

5. The Hammock

The basic underlying purpose of tropical décor is to foster an air of comfort and ease. Nothing says relaxation quite like sturdy hammock. If you can, install one in between two palm trees to add a nice finishing touch.

6. A Sand Pit

If your backyard has enough space, don't hesitate to build a sand pit. Sand pits contribute to the backyard's overall tropical theme and are great place for volleyball games or can serve as a simple sandbox for the kids.

When decorating your yard for the summer, why not try a beautiful backyard tropical decor?

10 Hot Spring Decor Ideas and Tips

Spring is finally on its way which is a big relief to people in parts of the country who may have had some rough winter weather this year. It's time to celebrate the new time of year, the coming of a new season and the beautiful weather in store for us. One way you can celebrate this great weather is by decorating your home for spring.

This is a time for spring cleaning, as you know so it's a great time to revamp your home, especially the main rooms that visitors see when they come to your home. Decorating your home for spring does not have to be difficult or expensive and can be achieved with some nice cleaning and reorganizing.

Here are 10 hot sprint decor ideas and tips for your home that won't cost you a bundle:

1. Clean out that clutter! This is a great time to clean out the clutter that has been collecting over the past few months. Open up the drapes, get some sunshine in your room and clean out all that extra stuff that's lying around.

2. Clean up your front! Take this time to clean out the front doorstep and make it more inviting for people. Sweep the stoop, dust out the mats, clean the windows, etc.

3. Bring on the green! Now is time to get rid of those old dusty silk plants and flowers and bring out some fresh flowers, greenery and lively plants. Spring is a great time for brightening up the home.

4. Clean out the fireplace! If you have a fireplace that you've been using all winter, now is a great time to clean it out. Even if you still need to use it on a few chilly nights, it's still a great idea to clean out all those old ashes and soot now.

5. Redo your rugs! If you have rugs throughout your home, this may be a great chance to switch them out for spring or summer rugs. If you don't have any to switch out, try moving them to different rooms throughout your home for a fresher look and also be sure to clean them properly and remove any dust build up.

6. Let in the light! This is a great time to begin opening your shades and window coverings, cleaning your windows, using sheer curtains and finding other ways of letting that great spring sunshine into your home.

7. Check your accessories! Look around your home at your wall décor and other accessories. This is a great time to revamp the decor look in your home by changing some simple accessories to more spring-like designs, colors and patterns.

8. Clean your fans! If you have ceiling fans in your home, take time to clean and dust them properly, including lights and fixtures, and change the direction in which your fans are blowing.

9. Create a window box! Another great craft/decor idea is to create a lovely springtime window box for display. It's fun to do and it looks great.

10. Spring scents! Remember that a clean-smelling home is all the more inviting. Instead of wasting money on sprays and other products designed to make your home smell better, create your own spring scents. Try a simmering pot of cloves and cinnamon or dried flower leaves to give your entire home a great scent.

Coastal Candle Displays

If you love the beach and the beauty of the sea, you'll take to decorating with coastal theme candle displays like a fish takes to water. Collections of shells, stones and sea treasures collected from days spent combing your favorite beaches will be brought into play in these decorative displays. Accent your mementos from favorite beach vacations with craft store items such as artificial starfish, sand dollars, coral and sea horses.

Driftwood, Coral and Hurricanes

Accent a favorite piece of driftwood with this dramatic display. Start with a platter or charger large enough to accommodate your driftwood. Add a layer of plain or colored sand and arrange your driftwood on top. Surround it with seashells, sand dollars, pieces of coral, polished beach glass and stones. Add a few votive candles in cut glass or frosted glass holders for sparkle; or purchase candles in the shape of large seashells. This makes a great display for a table top. A piece of coral could be used in place of the driftwood.

Many variations on this theme are possible. For example, you could place a pillar candle and a hurricane on the center of the platter instead of the driftwood, surrounding it with shells, starfish, glass and stone pieces and a few tea light candles. Or take a glass cylinder, layer sand, pebbles and glass and push a pillar candle into the sand. Surround the candle with coastal accents like shells, sand dollars, and glass beads.

Coastal Layers and Moods

Beautiful candle holders in coastal theme can be incorporated with your natural accents to create striking displays.
  • Arrange sand, tea light candles, beach glass, stones, shells and starfish on a white porcelain or clear glass platter around a finger clam shell candleholder. Beautiful candleholders in the shapes of sand dollars, starfish, sea urchins, egrets or sandpipers give you unlimited options in creating a unique display. A flat basket or wooden tray can also be used as a stand for your display. Consider battery operated candles in lieu of real candles; they're safer and look as appealing as the real thing.
  • Make whimsical candle displays with novelty candles shaped like beach balls and votive candles in small buckets. Arrange the beach ball candles on a tray layered with craft sand; add your beach balls and mini-bucket candles for a beach party on a platter! This is a fun arrangement for a cookout or patio party. Bring one as a hostess gift for any summer party or barbeque.
  • Beautiful candles shaped like shells, sea birds, sand dollars, coral, sea urchins or sea horses, clams, lobsters, fish, crabs and more can be arranged on any platter or tray and embellished with additional shells, pieces of driftwood or coral, stones, or polished glass.
  • Make a sea inspired table wreath. Start with a flat backed Styrofoam wreath foam. Spray on craft glue and sprinkle with craft sand; let dry and shake off excess. Use hot glue to affix sea shells, stones and glass. Mix in a few larger items like sand dollars or starfish. Set your wreath on a round tray large enough to accommodate it and place a pillar candle and hurricane in the center of your wreath. If the tray is much larger than the wreath, add a border of sand and accent it with colored beach glass or faux pearls.
